The Eastland Mavericks made history Thursday and Friday in College Station at the Texas State 7-on-7 Tournament. They won all three games in their pool to advance to the championship bracket on Friday. The Mavs were in a tough pool with East Bernard (11-man State Champion 2012), Fairfield (11-man State runner up in 3-A in 2013), and Sabine (1-9 in 2013, but a new quarterback is turning around things for Sabine this year and has lead them to the State 7on7 Tournament). The Mavs went undefeated in their pool to go on into the championship bracket in the state tournament for the first time in Eastland's 7-on-7 history.
(Thursday Score Recap: Eastland 33 East Bernard 32, Eastland 40 Sabine 20 and Eastland 27 Fairfield 19)
Friday Morning, play began at 9:00am. The Mavs beat Princeton 28-25. They were down at the half against Brownwood and fought back to win 32-27. This win moved the Mavericks to the turf field to play Kountze. They beat Kountze in an exciting game 27-26 to get to the state semi-finals to play Plano Prestonwood.
In the first 10 minutes of play, the Mavs were tied with Prestonwood and were still tied at 13 all at halftime. Prestonwood scored twice to improve their score to 25-13. In under 11 minutes Prestonwood scored and then the Mavs answered, to make the final 31-19.
Coach Orsagh said, "I'm really proud of the Eastland 7-on-7 team! You surprised everyone and competed every play! Let's carry it over to Friday nights!"
The Mavericks went 14-3 overall during this summer's tournaments.
"I do not have words to describe how much determination and fight the boys showed over the last two days (at the State Tournament). It was a true team effort going out each game in the blistering heat and playing to the final whistle. If this 7-on-7 team is any indication of what the fall has in store, the people of Eastland have a treat coming this football season," said Coach Orsagh.
Congratulations to Coach Billy Bob Orsagh and the 2014 7-on-7 team for reaching the semi-finals at state from EastlandSportsPage.com. Thanks to Billy Bob Orsagh, the City of Eastland, all of the fine sponsors and businesses, and the players' families who helped them travel to College Station to compete! Without this help and support it would not have been possible.
